In the setting of the book the author tell us about some of the character who are Jane Conrad, her husband Pete Conrad who was a test  pilot. The story takes place in Florida,  jacksonville. This is where they live. They both had met each other at Princeton university. They married 2 years after they graduated from Princeton. They had one son named peter.
